Hey there, I’m Des!
I’m a Yoga Guide and Grief Doula who lives, breathes, and plays on Michi Saagig Anishnabeg territory, Treaty 20, and the Williams Treaties in Nogojiwanong, what is colonially known as “Peterborough, ON” in so-called “Canada.” Nogojiwanong means “the place at the end of the rapids,” in Ojibwe. I often consider these rapids as quick moving and fast paced, and then consider the end as a place to find stillness and rest. I strive to offer spaces which encourage and prioritize slowness and rest, especially for those in Queer and racialized communities. My roots are in Southeast Asia (Singapore and Malaysia) with Ancestry in South India (Kerala). Migration and transition is important to me, especially in my personal honouring of loss and grief. I identify as genderqueer and primarily use they/them pronouns but am more relaxed with racialized folks due to cultural reasons. For example, my younger cousins refer to me as “Akka” which means “older sister” in Tamil and I have a nibling who calls me “Aunty Dezzo.” I have kin who know how strong the Aunty vibes are! I usually have Vaseline, mints/sweets and tissues on hand! Rooted in values of authenticity, reciprocity, interdependence, and compassion, I try to guide with these values at heart. I am passionate about yoga philosophy and mythology, viewing storytelling and sharing as a form of connecting deeper with all beings. My role in the revolution is to be of service, what’s your role? I am grateful to the Canmore Counselling Trauma Informed Yoga School team and all of the teachers and guides I have met on the journey to be a Yoga Therapist. The experience has allowed me to expand and I hope to share what I have learned with you some day as I continue to learn and grow. I appreciate you! Hope to meet you in the wild or virtually soon! |
